The Positive Effects of Social Media Use

Dave Parrack’s article “The Positive Impact Of Social Networking Sites On Society [Opinion]” states that social media plays a massive role in society but that there are positive effects regarding the use of social networking. He supports this statement with arguments that social helps people to make friends, develop empathy, communicate, educate and build relationships. The purpose of this article is to acknowledge that the use of social media can be positive for many people and the there are not only negative consequences for using social media. The casual language is tailored towards a younger audience that uses social media.

Social media gets a very bad reputation for being a determinate to human social growth. However there are many beneficial aspects of using social media. It can be very good for meeting people and building relationship if it is used in the correct way. I think that this article speaks to the notion that most everything is good in moderation and we as a society just need to find a balance between on screen communication and face-to-face communication. I really liked how the author talked about how social media helps build empathy. Social media receives pretty consistent negative commentary about how it creates a forum for people to compare their own lives to unobtainable standards of perfection. Not many people recognize that it is actually a forum for story telling and experience sharing and helps users learn about each other and find common ground with new people.

  1. This was a refreshing read after seeing all of the negative effects social media has on society. It is nice to see some people believe that social media can be used for the right reasons. I agree with the author, social media can be a great tool to stay connected and network with others. How do we find the balance between the right and wrong uses of social media?

  2. I think the story telling part of social media is a bit fascinating. Most people tell stories all the time in conversation so to see it translate into cyber communication is interesting. I think that;s why companies started using social media screens for job applicants in their hiring process. And with a lot of HR departments in big corporations pushing for a healthier work/life balance maybe social media is a big piece to solving the puzzle.
